Custom Error Messages:

When a user attempts to connect to a Web site and an HTTP error occurs, a generic message is sent back to the client browser with a brief description of what happened during the attempt to establish a connection. You can configure IIS to send custom error messages instead of the default error messages by mapping to a file or by mapping to a URL.

To configure custom error messages

Follow these steps

1.Create your custom error message and place them in a folder.

2.In the Internet Information Services snap-in, select the Web site, virtual folder, folder, or file in which you want to customize HTTP error messages and click Properties.

3.On the Custom Errors property sheet, select the HTTP error message that you want to change and click Edit Properties.

4.In the Message Type box, select File. Type the path and file name that points to your customized error message, or use the Browse button to locate the file on your computer’s hard disk. Click OK.

5.If you want to select URL, then Type the URL that points to your customized error message by entering the path to the URL, beginning with the virtual folder name. Click OK.

Solution

Isolating users in normal mode.

To create a new FTP site that isolates users
1. In IIS Manager, expand the local computer, right-click the FTP Sites folder, point to New, and click FTP Site.
2. Provide the required information in the FTP Site Description and IP Address and Port Settings dialog boxes, and click Next.
3. In the FTP User Isolation dialog box, click Isolate users, and click Next.
4. In the Path box, type or browse to the directory that contains, or will contain, the site content, and then click Next.
5. Select the check boxes for the FTP site access permissions you want to assign to your users, and then click Next.
6. Click Finish.

To create FTP root-point and user folders
If users of the local computer log in with their individual account user names, create the subdirectories LocalUser under the FTP site root directory you specified when you creating the FTP site.
For Example –
FTP root directory -> D:\MyFTP\
LocalUser locate at D:\MyFTP\LocalUser

For individual user, you need to create folder in this format – LocalUser\username
User: Susan locate at D:\MyFTP\LocalUser\Susan

If users of different domains log on with their explicit domain\username credentials, create a subdirectory for each domain (by using the name of the domain) under the FTP site root directory you specified when you creating the FTP site.
For Example –
Domain Name: Account
FTP root directory -> D:\MyFTP\
LocalUser locate at D:\MyFTP\Account

For individual domain user, you need to create folder in this format – Domain\username
Domain User: Nancy locate at D:\MyFTP\Account\Nancy

Anonymous access in isolated ftp site
If anonymous access is allowed, create the subdirectories LocalUser and LocalUser\Public under the FTP site home directory.

Note: All user home directories are in a directory structure under a single FTP root directory where each user is placed and restricted to their home directory. Users are not permitted to navigate out of their home directory. If users need access to dedicated shared folders, you can also establish a virtual root.

The IISADMPWD virtual directory allows users to change their account passwords remotely through IIS by means of ASP scripts. IISADMPWD does not come installed as part of a standard Windows Server 2003 IIS install.

To create the IISADMPWD virtual directory, follow these steps:
In the Internet Services Manager Microsoft management Console (MMC), expand Web Sites, right-click the Default Web Site, select New, and then select Virtual Directory.
When the Virtual Directory Creation Wizard starts, follow the instructions to create the virtual directory with the alias IISADMPWD. Point the path to the local %systemroot%\System32\Inetsrv\Iisadmpwd directory. For the Access Permissions allow both Read and Run Script privilages.

To set the PasswordChangeFlags value in the IIS metabase, do the following:
From a command prompt browse to the C:\Inetpub\Adminscripts directory.
Type adsutil.vbs, and then press the ENTER key. If this is the first time that Adsutil.vbs has been run, you may get error messages stating that Cscript is not registered. Follow the prompts and choose Yes to register Cscript.
Type adsutil.vbs set w3svc/1/PasswordChangeFlags [value].

w3svc/1 represents the Default Web Site and [value] can be set to one of the following options:
0 – SSL connection required
1 – Password changing allowed on non-secure ports.
2 – Password changing disabled.
3 – Password changing disabled. (Undocumented)
4 – Advance notification of password expiration disabled.

Users should now be able to change their Local Account password by visiting:
http[s]://[server address]/iisadmpwd/aexp2.asp
Or their Domain Account password by visiting:
http[s]://[server address]/iisadmpwd/aexp2b.asp

Sometimes, after the installation of the SMTP service on Windows Server 2003, the SMTP tree may not appear in the IIS Manager console. Thankfully, there are two methods for troubleshooting this.

Ensuring SMTP Appears in the IIS Manager

Method 1)

  1. First, click the Start button, then Run…
  2. Now, type:

    regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\smtpsnap.dll

Alternatively, %systemroot% can be replaced with the drive Windows Server 2003 is installed on.

OR

Method 2)

By uninstalling and re-installing IIS, including the SMTP service, it has also proven to fix the problem. However, it is recommended you try method 1 first, before going to the trouble of uninstalling and reinstalling IIS completely.

Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) permits you to map multiple Web sites to a single IP address using a feature called Host Header Names. By assigning a unique host header name to each Web site, this feature permits you to map more than one Web site to an IP address.

Configure Web Sites by Using Host Header Names
To configure Web sites by using the Host Header Names feature, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services.
2. Expand * server name (where server name is the name of the server), and then expand Web Sites.
3. Right-click the Web site that you want, and then click Properties.

The Web site name Properties dialog box appears (where Web site name is the name of the Web site that you selected).
4. Click the Web Site tab, and then in the IP Address list, select the IP address that you want assigned to this Web site.
5. Click Advanced.
6. Under Multiple identities for this Web Site, click the IP address, and then click Edit.

The Advanced Web Site Identification dialog box appears.
7. In the Host Header Name box, type the host header that you want. For example, type www.example1.com. Add the port number, select the IP address in the list, and then click OK.

NOTE: If you want to configure this Web site with additional identities, click Add. Use the same IP address and TCP port, but enter a unique Host Header Name, and then click OK. For example, if you want to access the same Web site from both the Internet and a local intranet, you can configure the Web site identity in the manner shown in the following example:
IP Address TCP Port Host Header Name 192.168.0.100 80 www.example1.com 192.168.0.100 80 example1.com

8. In the Advanced Multiple Web Site Configuration dialog box, click OK.
9. In the Web site name Properties dialog box, click OK.

You return to the IIS window.
10. Right-click the next Web site that you want, and then click Properties.
11. In the IP Address list, select the same IP address that you selected in step 4, and then click Advanced.
12. Under Multiple identities for this Web Site, click the IP address, and then click Edit.

The Advanced Web Site Identification dialog box appears.
13. In the Host Header Name box, type a unique host header for this Web site. For example, type www.example2.com, add the port number, select the IP address in the list, and then click OK.
14. In the Advanced Multiple Web Site Configuration dialog box, click OK.
15. In the Web site name Properties dialog box, click OK.

You return to the IIS window.
16. Repeat steps 10 through 15 for each Web site that you want hosted on this IP address.
17. Register the host header names with the appropriate name resolution system — for example, a Domain Name System (DNS) server or, in the case of a small network, a Hosts file.
The Web sites are now configured to accept incoming Web requests, based on their host header names.

More Information
Do not assign a host header name to the Default Web Site. Many programs expect the Default Web Site to use an IP address of (All Unassigned), TCP Port 80, and no host header name.

Troubleshooting
• Clients cannot connect to the Web sites by using the IP address:

Because there is more than one Web site configured to the IP address, you must connect to the Web site by using the host header name. When you try to connect to the Web site by using the IP address, you receive the following error message:
The page cannot be found.

The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.
• Clients cannot connect to the Web sites by using host header names:

Multiple host names must be mapped to the single IP address by using a DNS server or a Hosts file.

Usually the IUSR_ and IWAM_ passwords are set automatically and are never known. However, there are cases in which the passwords get out of sync or corrupted and need to be reset. The easiest way to reset these passwords is to extract the passwords that Microsoft IIS has in its metabase and update the accounts in Local Users and Groups to use that password.

You first need to update the adsutil.vbs script, which you’ll find in the AdminScripts folder under the Inetpub folder, to display sensitive information (e.g., passwords) instead of just asterisks. Open the adsutil.vbs file in Notepad and search for the text “IsSecureProperty = True”, replace this text with “IsSecureProperty = False” and save the file. Now run the following commands to return the passwords (/anonymoususerpass is the IUSR account; /wamuserpass is the IWAM_ account).
