This issue is a known Windows bug that occurs when the primary drive ( C: ) runs out of available free space. When this happens, Windows often overwrites control panel color settings for the desktop and login screen, resulting in the “blacked out” login screen and/or desktop.

When the login screen is black, you can often still access the normal Windows desktop, you just have to alt/tab through the various login screens:

When you first connect via RDC, there are two blanks you can tab through, the top one being the username (which should be Administrator, or, whatever you have set as your admin name), then, when you tab again, you will be in the password field. After entering the username and password, you should be able to Tab/Enter, and gain access to the system. If the system was just recently rebooted without warning, another screen (black) will pop up, asking why the server was rebooted. You can type anything here, and tab/enter again.

If the Windows desktop is also black, please open a ticket in Orbit and let us know, and technicians can log in locally and apply the following fix. H

However, should you be able to navigate the desktop, simply perform the following:

——-

1.) Again, this is caused by Windows running out of available space. The first thing you will need to do is clear an adequate amount of space on your system. If you do not have sufficient free space, Windows will soon overwrite any color changes you apply. Once you have cleared off space, proceed to step 2.

2.) Copy everything between the asterisks (not the asterisks themselves) into a notepad file on your desktop. Name it whatever you like, perhaps colorfix.
Save the changes. Then, rename the file extension to .reg.

3.) Once again, ensure you have sufficient free space. Then, double-click on the registry file you created. This will enter the color changes into the system. Then, go ahead and choose Shutdown/Restart to have the system reboot.

4.) When the system has rebooted, you should have a normal login screen and desktop.

5.) In rare cases, the login screen will remain black. Unfortunately, there is no known way to address this in these cases, but luckily, the black login screen is only an annoyance, as it can be bypassed with the above information and some careful keypresses. However, once you pass this login screen, you should still have a regular Windows desktop. If not, you will need to double check that you have a good amount of space on the primary drive, and perhaps try reentering the registry changes as above.

Changing the Listening Port

Need to change the port which Terminal Services listens on? To change your system’s listening port, just follow these 5 steps:

  1. First, run REGEDIT on your server.
  2. Now, export the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTerminal ServerWinStationsRDP-Tcp

  3. Edit the REG file and change the name of the key to something like:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTerminal ServerWinStationsRDP-Tcp-New

  4. Next, in the REG file find the PortNumber and change it to whatever port you want.
  5. Import the REG file back into the registry.

You can now connect to the new port using the “old” Windows 2000 Terminal Server client. Alternatively, a better option is to use the XP RDP 5.1 or the newer Windows Server 2003 RDP 5.2 client.

Altering the Port on the Client Side

To the alter the port from the client’s side, just follow these 5 steps:

  1. First, go to the Start menu and click on Run.
  2. On the Run menu, type “MSTSC” and click Enter.

*Note: To use RDP on computers with operating systems other than Windows XP/2003, you will first need to install the RDP client.

  3. Next, in the RDP window, in the Computer box, scroll to the computer name or IP which you wish to connect to.
  4. Add a “:Port” (without the quotes) where “Port” is the decimal value of the destination port.
  5. Once you’ve made your selection, press Connect.

Another method of connecting to a different port other than the default, is to run the MSTSC command with the required command line parameters:

/v:ServerName[:Port]

*For example: MSTSC /v:11.22.33.44:3390

When trying to connect to your Windows 2003 server remotely, you may receive the following error.

“The terminal server has exceeded the maximum number of allowed connections”

When your server is configured for “Administration Mode”, this error is by design. A quick way around this is to connect using the /console switch in Remote Desktop.

Start – > Run -> type mstsc /console /v:66.96.xx.xx (where 66.96.xx.xx is your server IP)

You can also enter Hostname instead of server Ip.

e.g.

Start – > Run -> type mstsc /console /v:test.hivelocity.net

This will allow you to connect to the actual console of the server and reset the offending terminal services remote connections.

This is also a good tip for installing applications that will not allow you to install them via Remote Desktop Connection.

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. Only one Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connection can be configured for each network adapter in a terminal server. What is RDP?

RDP, or Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol Client is a windows-based software that allows connection to a terminal-server either via a local LAN connection or through remote connection via the internet.

Installing RDP

The following procedure details the steps necessary to install RDP.

Step One – Downloading RDP client to your PC

Before you can install RDP, you’ll need to download it onto your local computer. Follow these steps:

  1. First connect to the Internet
  2. Then follow this link to connect to the Microsoft RDP web page:
    https://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/tools/1.0/wxp/en-us/msrdpcli.exe
  3. When the file download window appears – click on the Save button, browse to the desktop then click the save button again.
  4. The RDP client will start to download and should take approx. 10 minutes on a 56K modem connection.

Step Two – Installing RDP Client

To install the RDP client:

  1. Open Explorer (Right click on the Start menu and select Explore).
  2. Browse to the Desktop and then double click on the icon titled msrdpcli.exe
  3. Click the following buttons:
    Next -> I Accept the terms…… -> Next -> Next -> Install -> Finish

Step Three – Load the Terminal Server Address

To load the terminal server address:

  1. Contact your Systems administrator and get the address of your terminal server. You will be issued with two addresses; one is the LAN address used to connect within your building. The second is the Internet address for connection via the Internet from any outside location.
  2. Start RDP. To do so, go to the Start menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop
  3. Once RDP has started, enter the appropriate address to the RDP Client address field, to the right of the word Computer.

Step Four – Connect to the Terminal Server

Lastly, you’ll need to connect to the terminal server. To do so:

  1. Connect to the Internet.
  2. Start RDP client as above
  3. Ensure that you have the correct address loaded to the right of the word Computer
  4. Click on connect

After a brief delay you should get a Windows login box. After logging in to the Terminal Server, you’re free to start working!
