At Hivelocity we put in a lot of effort into creating the “Hivelocity Experience” for our customers. The Hivelocity Experience is a company initiative that focuses on optimizing our customer’s experiences and interactions with Hivelocity. The Hivelocity Experience is about providing an exceptional level of customer service and quality uncommon in any industry, let alone the dispassionate world of hosting and data centers.

The Hivelocity Experience

(Below is an email, untouched and in its entirety, that we received from a customer September 11th, 2013 that explains better than we can what the Hivelocity Experience really is.)

Brian,

Yes, everything went smoothly with the colo last weekend.

But that’s what I’ve come to expect from you guys, honestly, I know you guys have lots of clients, but like I always, you make me feel like I’m your best client. 🙂

Matthew and Jake took very good care of me.

My only regret was getting there kinda late, so I didn’t get to catch up with the rest of the guys in support, but in a few weeks when I bring the next server, I’ll be there much earlier in the day, so I can catch up with my peeps.

As usual, thanks again, you guys always take very good care of me, from the time I talk to Kevin, Rob, or Drew in sales, and then after the sale when I talk to any of the guys in support, or Steve, it’s always top-notch.

Truly you guys have spoiled me, because if anything ever happened to you guys and Hivelocity was no more, you’d have me holding other hosting companies to an impossible standard, because honestly, I don’t think any other hosting provider can compete with you guys — I don’t know what the heck I would do! 🙂

To review what I’ve been referring to as the “Hivelocity Difference” when I talk to my clients versus my previous host in 2004, and hosts that still exist today (who you guys will eventually crush anyways), I’ve come up with a few points, where you guys simply make other hosts look sub-standard:

Phone Calls:

Them: 30 minutes+ hold time when calling.

HV: < 1 minute 90% of the time, 10% of the time 3-5 minutes.

Support (phone and ticket system):

Them: 1,000+ Support Reps who need to “escalate tickets” or who aren’t skilled enough to support you, thereby increasing your turn over time for support, usually leading to you contacting them again for the same problem. Ticket response averages between 12-24 hours.

HV: < 1,000 Support Reps who make it a habit of “taking ownership” over problems, actually follow-up with you if required, and are skilled enough to help you from beginning of the problem, to conclusion. Ticket response is typically less than 1 hour, sometimes up to 2-3 hours tops. Because the support guys actually give a damn, and want to make sure your problem gets resolved. They don’t “just work there”.

Bonus: Most of the support guys know my voice as soon as they hear it!

Sales and Sales Process:

Them: Difficult to understand reseller/affiliate programs that take very long to benefit you as a client, and are difficult to track. Sales people give you different quotes, and/or don’t honor quotes provided by other sales team members — you get the run around, making it hard for you to offer said services to your clients.

HV: Simple affiliate/reseller programs (I’m part of both), that easily track your sales, make it easy to refer clients, and sales people who no matter who you get are always willing to help, whether you get Drew, Rob, Lee, or Kevin, I can get a checkout link for a specific system for one of my clients in less than 10 minutes majority of the time — even when it’s busy, I still get a checkout link by e-mail in less than 30 minutes!

Network / Hardware / Quality of Service:

Them: Typically downtime goes un-noticed, and is a common occurrence, which they figure is just the “course of doing business”. In some cases, the host (i.e. HostGator, BlueHost, etc) don’t even have a datacenter, so they are depending on their provider to fix the issue. Hardware is generally over-priced, forcing you to price it even higher for your client, resulting in lost business. Overall a poor quality of service.

HV: Downtime is taken seriously, and in some cases, I’ve called, and the support guys are well aware of the issue, and don’t mind taking a minute or two to explain to you what’s up. Heck I’ve had some of the guys call me back to let me know a specific issue has been resolved! Talk about follow-through! Hardware is always priced reasonably. I even mentioned to Drew recently since I’ve been considering colo for awhile now that the hardware is priced so reasonably at Hivelocity, it made much more sense for me to simply lease the equipment in some cases, rather than buy it myself! Overall a kick-ass experience.

And this isn’t just me that feels this way — I’ve referred plenty of clients to Hivelocity, and when I talk to them, their experience and feelings mirror mine — Regina said to me the other day (when comparing her uptime at HV as opposed to her old host StartLogic): “Where did you find these guys?? I should have been using them long time ago!”

I don’t know if you guys treat all your clients like me (with comments like the one above from Regina, I somehow suspect you do treat most clients like you treat me), but I will never run out of good things to say about you guys. Thanks again!! 🙂

Hivelocity announced this week that is has completed the replacement of every battery in its power backup UPS system. The Hivelocity battery backup system consists of 3 battery banks. The first battery bank is the primary with the other two being redundant banks.

The old battery banks were nearing end of life and the time had come for them all to be replaced with new 12 volts. The new backup system is configured to allow for a handful of batteries to fail on any or all banks without any interruption in power. “We will be posting some pictures of the new battery setup on our site within the data center tour very soon” says Hivelocity GM Steve Eschweiler.”We are happy to have this task completed. Reliable power is paramount for us, and these new batteries certainly give us peace of mind.”

Dedicated server provider, Hivelocity, has been named Best Unix Dedicated Host by DedicatedServerDir.com for April 2009. This is the third hosting award Hivelocity has received in 3 months for its dedicated servers.

DedicatedServerDir collects thousands of votes each month on a range of hosting services. Each month a winner is announced based on the sum of votes in each category. In February of this year Hivelocity achieved the Best Windows Dedicated Host at WebHostDir and was voted a Top 25 overall host by Tophosts in March. In addition to the numerous awards Hivelocity has racked up this year, they were also named Web Host Magazine’s Editor’s Choice for Best Dedicated Host in 2008. Hivelocity attributes its recent run on awards to its focus on customer service and value. “Too many of our competitors have forgotten what it means to be a service oriented business. In many ways computers have made it easy to forget personal service and customer care. With email, tweets and chat some companies may never even speak to their customers. We at Hivelocity believe you can be a leader in cutting edge technology and still make customer service paramount. When a customer or potential customer deals with a Hivelocity representative, we want them to feel like they are a guest at a five-star hotel,” says General Manager Steve Eschweiler.

Since its inception in 2001, Hivelocity has earned a reputation for being one of the best values in the dedicated hosting sector. With Core2Duo dedicated servers starting at $75, Core2Quads at $99, and Quad-Core Xeon dedicated servers starting at $165, they seem to have some of the most competitive pricing around. Considering Hivelocity uses SuperMicro hardware and boasts a 99.98% uptime track record over the last 3 years (stats by Webhostingstuff) while maintaining this great pricing point, these awards seem to be very well deserved.

Dedicated server host, Hivelocity, announced this week it will be promoting exclusive server deals to its Twitter followers. Since March 27th Hivelocity has been sending out daily and sometimes hourly tweets announcing short term server promotions.

Since their first tweet just 2 weeks ago, Hivelocity has attracted over 900 followers. The Twitter phenomenon has taken the world by storm and Hivelocity is more than happy to capitalize on its success. From free secondary hard drives to $99 Core2Quad server offers, Hivelocity is making these offers exclusive to only people who have found them through twitter.com/hivelocity. Each of Hivelocity’s tweets to this point has been one day only and sometimes one hour only offers. “Twitter is a wonderful way to not only introduce non-customers to Hivelocity but to let existing customers know of company and network news. We plan on sending out at least one tweet every day announcing a great deal on a new server or cheap way to upgrade an old server. Everyone needs to know, these promotions are exclusive to our Twitter followers and the only way to know about them is to join our tweet” says Hivelocity’s General Manager, Steve Eschweiler.

Twitter is a free social networking site that allows its users to send short bursts of information to anyone who signs up as a follower of someone else. Each Tweet is limited to 140 characters and is meant to keep each follower up to speed with user’s day to day activities. Companies like Hivelocity using Twitter to keeps its followers up to speed with the company’s day to day activity is becoming more and more common.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In its latest philanthropic effort, dedicated hosting provider Hivelocity (www.hivelocity.net) will be providing the world’s largest open-source software development and distribution environment, SourceForge (www.sourceforge.net), with mirror site services. According to the company’s Monday announcement, Hivelocity’s global network infrastructure will help support more than 180,000 projects and more than 1.9 million registered users.

SourceForge and its network of sites helps provide a central place for technology enthusiasts from around the world to connect, develop, and share open-source software. In late January, content delivery network provider CDNetworks (www.cdnetworks.com) began providing SourceForge.net with state-of-the-art mirror sites in the US and Asia, improving its speed and reliability at no charge to SourceForge.net as part of its support of the free development and exchange of software in the Open Source community.

Specializing in dedicated server hosting and unmetered bandwidth, Hivelocity has a wide global network reach, making it a naturally strong provider of mirror services, not unlike CDNetworks. Ideologically, Hivelocity is also supportive of open-source software, having provided mirrors to community-created enterprise operating system CentOS (www.centos.org).

Hivelocity’s mirror will give SourceForge users access to the Hivelocity network for uploading and downloading data for these development projects. “We are so happy to promote the free flow of thought and development along the Internet,” Hivelocity general manager Steve Eschweiler said in a statement. “SourceForge helps inspire and produce brilliant ideas and applications that improve the way people run their businesses and lives. What a great product to support.”

With a massive following and a monthly readership in the millions, SlashGear.com, recently made the difficult decision to migrate its entire online infrastructure to a new hosting service. SlashGear is a wildly popular technology news and review site, ranked only behind PCMag in visitors, within the Ziff Davis Tech Media Engine. When just a few minutes of downtime results in thousands of customers being turned away, the decision to migrate the sizable SlashGear environment was not one taken lightly. As it turns out, the decision to move the SlashGear private cloud to Hivelocity was the right one and made for numerous reasons.

A Hivelocity employee standing among racks of servers

“Since IBM took over, the service at Softlayer has degraded”, according to SlashGear cofounder Ewdison Then. SlashGear had been a long time customer of both Hivelocity and Softlayer, with Softlayer hosting the lion’s share of SlashGear content. “We chose Hivelocity due to their support responsiveness and self-maintained data centers. Since the data migration, SlashGear is performing incredibly well and the experience has been great. We were able to migrate our entire infrastructure with zero downtime,” said Mr. Then. “Ticket responses from Softlayer had become slow, hardware prices have increased, and ultimately they were unable to accommodate our needs like Hivelocity. Softlayer lowering bandwidth to only include 500GB was the last straw.” At any given moment SlashGear.com has several thousand visitors, so high volume bandwidth options being accessible and affordable is imperative. Hivelocity servers include anywhere from 10TB to 100TB by default with upgrade options such as 1Gbps Unmetered Ports available for as low as $199.

With the data migration to Hivelocity complete, SlashGear can comfortably focus its energy on growth with a plan to expand into areas outside of technology already underway. “We are now venturing big into automotive with the recent introduction of https://www.slashgear.com/cars/,” says Mr. Then. “Businesses want a hosting service that will work with them and share a common goal of mutual success. By providing an affordable and dependable hosting environment with ample resources for growth, Hivelocity now gets a front row seat to watch SlashGear’s future accomplishments,” remarked Hivelocity COO Steve Eschweiler.

Hivelocity provides dedicated servers, private cloud, and colocation hosting solutions to customers from over 130 countries worldwide. Hivelocity was founded in 2002 and maintains several data centers in the United States. SlashGear was founded in 2005 and has been a CES, IFA, and Ceatec official media partner.

With the passing of 2016 it has now been 15 years since the birth of Hivelocity. Every one of those 15 years has included its share of accomplishments and fond memories. As the years have passed the accomplishments have become grander and the memories sweeter. Back in 2002 we celebrated our very first customers. In 2003 we celebrated the hiring of our 10th employee. In 2004 we sold our first dedicated server. Every one of these were landmark events for Hivelocity and worthy of celebrating with cheap beer. Today we have customers around the world, hire new employees all the time and deploy a few hundred servers every month. The measuring stick on what is considered an achievement is a little longer these days. With that, let’s look back on 2016 and see what events were worthy of a few beers…only the good stuff nowadays (Dales Pale Ale, Lagunitas IPA and anything from Victory Brewing to name a few of our favorites.)

The first drink worthy event was the completion of our new 30,200 square foot TPA2 data center. The build out of TPA2 began in Q4 of 2015 and after what seemed like an eternity to our Sales Team, opened its door for business this past November. In just 2 months, our TPA2 data center is already the home to hundreds of new customers and over 1000 physical servers. Cheers!

New Tampa Data Center Hivelocity New Tampa Data Center Hivelocity

As you may know, we have always maintained a fairly significant presence in Atlanta with more than a few racks at TELX (57 Marietta). While TELX is one of the most well connected buildings in the world it’s not ideal for larger footprints like Hivelocity’s. So in Q1 of 2016 we began building out a new data center pod in downtown Atlanta just a few blocks away from TELX on Peach Tree St. With ATL1 going online in July we now have 50+ racks in downtown Atlanta to offer our full suite of private cloud, colocation, dedicated server and management services. If you couldn’t guess, building a data center is a huge undertaking. Launching 2 new facilities at the same time is just plain silly. I can personally account for the stock symbols EXDRN and PEPTO going up 28% last year and I was quoting the movie Airplane pretty much every week.

Data Center Hivelocity Hosting Joke Image

With no shortage of motivation to make our lives easier, in Q2 last year we chose to make Solid State Drives or SSD the default drive included with every dedicated server and virtual server we sell. We had been offering SSD as an upgrade option for years but because of perceived extra costs had continued to make traditional spinning disks our base offering. As it turns out, we have experienced a failure rate of near 0% with our SSDs resulting in lower operating costs while providing our customers with a much faster and reliable solution. Check this out! Last year we deployed over $500,000 in Micron SSDs and as of today we have yet to RMA even one of them. NOT ONE! As luck would have it, we did have one possibly fail just a few days ago but we are not done testing it yet which means it has not been RMAd. I do, however, reserve the right to amend my statement of “NOT ONE” to “ONE”.

By this point your jaw is likely on the floor from amazement or because I have put you to sleep. So let me throw a few more acronyms at you and completely blow your mind or put you in comatose. In addition to TPA2, ATL1, SSDs with no RMAs, we launched our CDN! OMG, you heard right. In December, we quietly launched our new Content Delivery Network with POPs scattered across 5 continents. We intend to make a much bigger deal of this product launch in the very near future so prepare yourself accordingly. Did you introduce any other acronyms Steve? Funny you should ask. In November we added GPUs and PCIe SSD to our available server add-ons.

GPUs Hivelocity Hosting GPU Hivelocity Hosting

More, more, more! In my head I can hear you all clamoring for news of more acronyms. Just as I did last October 14th, as I accepted the Tampa Bay Tech’s Industry Achievement Award for Excellence in Service in front of hundreds of people from over 150 competing companies, I ask that you “please quiet down and know how honored I am to be a part of this.” Seriously though, Hivelocity winning this award was a BFD. Salute!

Tampa Bay Tech's Industry Achievement Award for Excellence in ServiceTampa Bay Tech's Industry Achievement Award for Excellence in Service

I will close by telling you what is likely our most important achievement of the year. In 2016 we resolved 47,101 trouble tickets for our customers located in 137 countries worldwide. The opportunity to perform this work for you all is truly what makes us most proud.

We look forward to continuing to offer our customers the most dependable and reliable hosting infrastructure around. We will be introducing new and innovative solutions that help foster your success with ease of use, simplistic scale and our expertise accessible to you at whatever level you need it. Thank you for helping making 2016 another great year in our company’s history. Shots!!

We are also very honored to have won considering the great companies we were up against,” said Steve Eschweiler, who accepted the award for Hivelocity Friday night.

Hivelocity Wins Industry Achievement Award for Excellence in Service

Hivelocity has provided its customers with 100% network and power uptime since the day they opened their TPA1 data center in 2012. When you consider that most data centers aim for 99.9% uptime and 99.999% (aka five nines) is considered elite, maintaining 100% year after year is an impressive feat and undoubtedly qualifies for excellence in service. “From the day we started our company, 15 years ago in a basement, our core philosophy has been to always consider the customer’s perspective first. Initially, this philosophy was designed to help us improve the way we interacted and interfaced with our customers. Over the years, however, it has become the philosophy that directs our company’s entire culture, who we hire, the tools we develop, how we sell our products and ultimately how we achieve 100% uptime,” says Eschweiler.

After several months of evaluation and with several hundred companies considered, Hivelocity is proud to have been named by the Business Journal as the #6 best place to work in Tampa Bay among BIG companies in 2016. The delta between #1 and #6 was roughly 2% points so we were very close to winning it all. We will of course look to improve our company as a whole over the next year and strive to be standing on the summit next year.

One thing that stood out among the Hivelocity Team is feeling valued. We surpassed the top 3 companies in this category which certainly makes everyone here feel good. If you don’t feel valued, if you don’t believe you have a voice, and if you don’t think your work makes a difference, you are likely not very happy with your job. While we are a technology company and we do rely on servers, software, generators, and other systems to do a lot of work for us, at the end of the day we are a service company. Every month we take hundreds of calls, thousands of chats, and resolve thousands of trouble tickets. If the people working on those issues don’t think they matter, you can bet the customer pays the price with subpar customer service. As a company, we have always hung our hat on adding personality and personal service to a very impersonal industry. Hivelocity having achieved well in this category validates what we are trying to accomplish for both our employees and our customers.

If you do the math on a 40 hour work week, 50 weeks a year (assuming 2 weeks off for vacation), you work 2,000 hours every year. Assuming you sleep 7 hours a night, that is another 2,548 hours. With only 8,760 hours in a year and only 6,212 of those being awake, you basically spend a 3rd of conscious life working. So we feel pretty good about the most commonly used word to describe the work environment here is “fun”. If 1/3 of your waking hours are fun and that is the 1/3 you are working, I would say you are in pretty good shape.

While we would have preferred being named the #1 place to work in Tampa Bay, we are still very proud for where we landed. Before Hivelocity, I had jobs that I would swear were with the #1 worst place to work in Tampa Bay. Being toward the very top of the right side of this list makes me proud and happy to be a part of it. From now until 2017, we will be working as a team here to make sure Hivelocity is not only the #1 best place to work but the best place to do business as well.
