12/2022 Update: With 2023 just around the corner, cPanel has once again raised its prices, with higher rates taking affect on December 16th of 2022. As a result, we here at Hivelocity have been forced to increase our cPanel prices as well, introducing a new 4 tier structure to keep pace with rising costs. Please note that as this article was originally written in 2019, the prices listed below are no longer applicable. For the most up-to-date pricing and a side-by-side comparison of our pricing structure versus cPanel’s own pricing, please visit our cPanel Flat Rate Pricing page.

Original Article:

As many of you already know, on June 27th of 2019, cPanel (now owned by Oakley Capital Investment Group via acquisition), announced plans to introduce all-new account based pricing for their control panel software. This all-new pricing was a shock to the system for the hosting industry as a whole considering cPanel maintains roughly 70% market share in the US and over 30% across the globe.

It would be naïve to think cPanel would not eventually raise their prices considering they were acquired by an investment group and prior to that, had not raised prices in over a decade. A modest price increase is what should have been expected but that is not what we got. Instead, cPanel raised base pricing by over 20% AND introduced a whole new billing methodology that increases costs with each account added to a server over 100. With many cPanel users having built their business models around a predictable static fee associated with their management software, this shift has created scenarios where once prosperous cPanel reliant businesses are potentially no longer viable. This is where Hivelocity comes in.

Screenshot showing cPanel logo and the text "announcing account based pricing"

Hivelocity is proud to announce today that it is bringing flat fees and predictable cPanel licensing back to the hosting and IaaS industry. “The more successful our customers are the more successful we will be,” has been our mantra since 2002 and we have no intention of losing that core philosophy now. It gives us great pleasure to announce Hivelocity’s go forward, flat-rate cPanel for bare-metal pricing:

  • 1-500 Accounts – $45/month
  • 501-1000 Accounts – $114/month
  • 1001+ Accounts- $189/month + $0.175 per additional account (this 3rd tier was added on August 16th due to strong customer demand)

NOTE: you can see a full list of our Instant Deploy and Same Day Custom Built Dedicated Servers at https://www.hivelocity.net/dedicated-servers/

For those of you who have not studied cPanel’s new pricing structure, we highly encourage you to do so now to fully grasp how aggressive our pricing is. In addition to being incredibly generous, the Hivelocity three-tier pricing model allows you to run your business as you always have, with sound knowledge of what your server bill is going to be each and every month. No need to hire an accountant, no need to over-analyze your cPanel bill every month, no need to worry every time you add a new account that your bill is going up… no need to change anything.

Hivelocity wants you to succeed. Hivelocity wants you to focus on growing your business and making a great living for you and your loved ones. Hivelocity knows that when we put you in the best position to succeed, you will, and so will we.

Existing customers will continue to pay their previous flat rate per month for cPanel on their Hivelocity dedicated server until October 1st, 2019 and will be billed within the 3-tier model thereafter. New bare-metal sign-ups will be presented with the 3-tier pricing model described below within our cart “effective immediately” (inside joke for those of you who have been following the cPanel pricing drama).

In addition to cPanel, Hivelocity offers Plesk, DirectAdmin, Webmin, and SolusVM control panels for those of you wanting to transition to a new control panel altogether. For anyone who is using cPanel with another provider, we do offer free cPanel migrations in many cases and migration assistance in all cases. Hivelocity also offers proactive managed services for cPanel and Linux Servers should you need extra help maintaining your dedicated server. You can discuss a new server and migration with one of our Account Managers via live chat, phone, or email at: support@hivelocity.net.

Hivelocity has added both Level3 and Time Warner Telecom to its list of bandwidth carriers this week. The addition of these two carriers further enhances the global reach of Hivelocity’s network.

By adding these 2 carriers Hivelocity now boasts a network consisting of four of the largest and most recognized transit carriers in the world. The inclusion of Level3, Time Warner, Global Crossing, and Cogent will equate to great ping times and tracerts to the Hivelocity network across the globe. With customers from nearly 100 countries, having a strong and diverse network is imperative. “Our goal is to build a network that limits no person from any country, state, or province around the world from starting a relationship with Hivelocity. By bringing on Level3 and TWTC this week, we took a major step towards completing that goal,” says Hivelocity GM Steve Eschweiler. “Once we turn up our FCP routing module in early 2010, we will have accomplished our goal of having one of the premier networks in the business.”

With Level3 and Time Warner online, Hivelocity now has 28 Gbps of total bandwidth capacity. Hivelocity offers customers port speeds up to 1Gbps and specializes in unmetered bandwidth.

Dedicated server provider, Hivelocity, has been named Best Unix Dedicated Host by DedicatedServerDir.com for April 2009. This is the third hosting award Hivelocity has received in 3 months for its dedicated servers.

DedicatedServerDir collects thousands of votes each month on a range of hosting services. Each month a winner is announced based on the sum of votes in each category. In February of this year Hivelocity achieved the Best Windows Dedicated Host at WebHostDir and was voted a Top 25 overall host by Tophosts in March. In addition to the numerous awards Hivelocity has racked up this year, they were also named Web Host Magazine’s Editor’s Choice for Best Dedicated Host in 2008. Hivelocity attributes its recent run on awards to its focus on customer service and value. “Too many of our competitors have forgotten what it means to be a service oriented business. In many ways computers have made it easy to forget personal service and customer care. With email, tweets and chat some companies may never even speak to their customers. We at Hivelocity believe you can be a leader in cutting edge technology and still make customer service paramount. When a customer or potential customer deals with a Hivelocity representative, we want them to feel like they are a guest at a five-star hotel,” says General Manager Steve Eschweiler.

Since its inception in 2001, Hivelocity has earned a reputation for being one of the best values in the dedicated hosting sector. With Core2Duo dedicated servers starting at $75, Core2Quads at $99, and Quad-Core Xeon dedicated servers starting at $165, they seem to have some of the most competitive pricing around. Considering Hivelocity uses SuperMicro hardware and boasts a 99.98% uptime track record over the last 3 years (stats by Webhostingstuff) while maintaining this great pricing point, these awards seem to be very well deserved.

Since their first tweet just 2 weeks ago, Hivelocity has attracted over 900 followers. The Twitter phenomenon has taken the world by storm and Hivelocity is more than happy to capitalize on its success. From free secondary hard drives to $99 Core2Quad server offers, Hivelocity is making these offers exclusive to only people who have found them through twitter.com/hivelocity. Each of Hivelocity’s tweets to this point has been one day only and sometimes one hour only offers. “Twitter is a wonderful way to not only introduce non-customers to Hivelocity but to let existing customers know of company and network news. We plan on sending out at least one tweet every day announcing a great deal on a new server or cheap way to upgrade an old server. Everyone needs to know, these promotions are exclusive to our Twitter followers and the only way to know about them is to join our tweet” says Hivelocity’s General Manager, Steve Eschweiler.

Twitter is a free social networking site that allows its users to send short bursts of information to anyone who signs up as a follower of someone else. Each Tweet is limited to 140 characters and is meant to keep each follower up to speed with user’s day to day activities. (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In its latest philanthropic effort, dedicated hosting provider Hivelocity (www.hivelocity.net) will be providing the world’s largest open-source software development and distribution environment, SourceForge (www.sourceforge.net), with mirror site services. According to the company’s Monday announcement, Hivelocity’s global network infrastructure will help support more than 180,000 projects and more than 1.9 million registered users.

SourceForge and its network of sites helps provide a central place for technology enthusiasts from around the world to connect, develop, and share open-source software. In late January, content delivery network provider CDNetworks (www.cdnetworks.com) began providing SourceForge.net with state-of-the-art mirror sites in the US and Asia, improving its speed and reliability at no charge to SourceForge.net as part of its support of the free development and exchange of software in the Open Source community.

Specializing in dedicated server hosting and unmetered bandwidth, Hivelocity has a wide global network reach, making it a naturally strong provider of mirror services, not unlike CDNetworks. Ideologically, Hivelocity is also supportive of open-source software, having provided mirrors to community-created enterprise operating system CentOS (www.centos.org).

Hivelocity’s mirror will give SourceForge users access to the Hivelocity network for uploading and downloading data for these development projects. “We are so happy to promote the free flow of thought and development along the Internet,” Hivelocity general manager Steve Eschweiler said in a statement. “SourceForge helps inspire and produce brilliant ideas and applications that improve the way people run their businesses and lives. What a great product to support.”

Why Should You Invest in a GPU Dedicated Server?

Are you considering a new dedicated server? If you’re like most business leaders, graphics processing units, or GPUs, may not be the first hardware add-ons that spring to mind, but they’re definitely worth your attention.

GPU dedicated server implementations have numerous advantages over their CPU-only counterparts. Here are some of the reasons to make the transition to GPGPU, or general-purpose computing on graphics processing units.

GPU Dedicated Server during boot from Hivelocity

GPU Dedicated Server during boot from Hivelocity.

The Benefits of GPU Offloading

If your server isn’t creating the graphics that your end-users see, then why does it need a GPU? Manufacturers design GPUs for fast 3-D processing, accurate floating-point arithmetic and error-free number crunching. Although they typically operate at slower clock speeds, they have thousands of cores that enable them to execute thousands of individual threads simultaneously.

You Get to Save Your CPU for the Big Stuff

Running computationally intensive tasks on a CPU can tie up the whole system. Offloading some of this work to a GPU is a great way to free up resources and maintain consistent performance.

Interestingly, you can just send the toughest workloads to your GPU while the CPU handles the main sequential processes. Such GPGPU strategies are critical to delivering better services that cater to end users, who experience accelerated performance.

GPU Dedicated Server Sever Racks

Big Data Thrives in Parallel Environments

Many of the Big Data tasks that create business value involve performing the same operations repetitively. The wealth of cores available in GPU server hosting lets you conduct this kind of work by splitting it up between processors to crunch through voluminous data sets at a quicker rate.

Improved Power Consumption

You don’t have to be an eco-conscious company to benefit from energy-efficient computing. GPU-equipped systems that use less energy to accomplish the same tasks place lower demands on the supplies that power them. In specific use cases a GPU can provide the same data processing ability of 400 servers with CPU only.

Hivelocity Data Center

Software Compatibility

Many modern software packages support GPGPU acceleration. A few even let you parallelize your existing code by including hints that tell the compiler where to offload work to the GPU. Of course, you may need to optimize certain parts of your applications, but when it’s this easy to take advantage of parallel computing, there’s no reason to hold back.

You Can Give Your Machine Learning Processes a Head Start

Tasks that rely on deep-learning and other AI training methods benefit greatly from GPGPU. GPU dedicated server devices can feed developing algorithms huge volumes of data in parallel. This capacity makes it much easier to teach your software how to recognize the trends and patterns that you’re interested in analyzing.

Get Started With GPU Server Hosting

GPU dedicated server hardware from Hivelocity makes it easy to leverage up to eight PNY Nvidia Quadro or Nvidia Tesla GPUs in a single server (AMD GPUs coming soon). What will you do with the freedom to use thousands of computing cores in parallel? To learn more about the possibilities, talk to a Hivelocity expert today.

Hivelocity, a dedicated server, cloud hosting, and infrastructure services provider to customers from over 130 countries, has announced the availability of Graphic Processing Units (GPU) with most dedicated servers and private clouds. Adding a GPU to new or existing servers is done with ease through the Hivelocity cart or ticket system. Initially, Hivelocity will offer customers the ability to add up to four NVidia Tesla or PNY Quadra GPUs within a single server, with more options coming soon.

A GPU is a massively parallel-able processing unit that can have many hundreds or thousands of cores. Where a CPU’s strength is in a single or a few complex threads, a GPU can handle many streams of data at once and process them in parallel. Deep Learning, High Performance Computing, or any application requiring highly parallel processing workloads can benefit from GPU processors. As time goes on, more and more applications will need to use GPU type processing. Think of a self-driving car and the many streams of data from all the sensors that need to be fed into a computer and processed instantly. By having a highly parallel capable system on board, this data is analyzed simultaneously in lieu of waiting on a CPU to perform the tasks one at a time. The shortened time in which a GPU processes this data versus a CPU could be the difference in avoiding an accident versus crashing your car.

Rows of opened servers receiving maintenance

GPUs work in conjunction with CPUs and with properly designed applications the threading of GPU required processing happens automatically. A CPU will fork out a process to the GPU workloads that a GPU handles best, while the CPU handles workloads it does best. In the end, it’s a beautiful symphony of computer engineering that will pave the way for future applications we have just barely scratched the surface of.

A GPU can be added to most any Hivelocity dedicated server for as little as $59 per month. For more information, please visit https://hivelocity.net and open a phone or chat dialogue with a Sales Rep.

First, let me explain what a “Future Proof Dedicated Server” is. The idea is to provide a bare-metal server that has so much power and bandwidth included day one, the need to scale in the future becomes moot. With that said, if down the road the need to add more resources does arise, it is as simple as a trouble ticket and a reboot. Each of our Future Proof servers is scalable to 1024 GB of DDR4 ECC REG memory, 72 physical cores (144 vCPUs), and 10Gbps unmetered throughput. Our Future Proof Dedicated Servers deliver a solid system infrastructure with redundancy and scalability while providing a predictable and controllable cost structure.

With the introduction of this new line of beefy servers, we thought it would be interesting to see how they compare in both price and scalability to similar specs in Amazon Web Services. We conducted a similar comparison to AWS last year using a current customer’s usage. Those results proved dramatic.

Hivelocity's 4 base configurations of Future Proof Dedicated Servers

With our Future Proof server line, we created 4 base configurations. We listed 4 base configurations in order to present a range of the available options, but in reality, the hardware specs of these servers can be customized a thousand different ways. The available configurations at AWS don’t exactly match with our base configurations so for the purpose of this comparison I used plans that were closest to a match as possible. Additionally, knowing 1Gbps unmetered (330,000 GB per month) is a lot of bandwidth, I compared our pricing to AWS options with minimal bandwidth as well as comparable bandwidth. In another effort to be fair to AWS, we have chosen several different compute usage ranges, from 25% to 100%. With our Future Proof Dedicated Servers 100% of the resources are available 24/7 of course. So, let’s see how things stacked up.

Future Proof Server- Baseline configuration #1

  • Dual Hex-Core Xeon 2.4GHz E5-2620 v3 (12 physical cores with HT = 24 vCPU)
  • 64 GB DDR4 ECC REG RAM
  • 4 x 480GB Micro DC510 SSD
  • RAID 10 (not mandatory but a hardware based RAID is free if wanted)
  • 1 Gbps Port Unmetered Bandwidth
  • Our price- $499/month, $0/setup fee

AWS – the closest to match available is the hi1.4xlarge instance

  • 16 vCPUs
  • 60.5 GB RAM
  • 2 x 1024 GB SSD
  • 5000 GB outbound bandwidth (chose standard “data transfer out” option”)
  • 500 GB inbound bandwidth
  • 25% utilization- $1117.55/month
  • 50% utilization- $1741.58/month
  • 100% utilization- $2989.64/month

AWS- hi1.4xlarge instance with comparable bandwidth throughput to the 1Gbps unmetered included with our Future Proof Servers.

  • 16 vCPUs
  • 60.5 GB RAM
  • 2 x 1024 GB SSD
  • 300,000 GB outbound bandwidth (chose standard “data transfer out” option”)
  • 25% utilization- $21,119.16/month
  • 50% utilization- $21,726.17/month
  • 100% utilization- $22,940.19/month

Amazon Web Services Cloud Hosting vs Future Proof Dedicated Server Price Comparison. Amazon Web Services cost nearly 6 times as much as a Hivelocity Future Proof server of the same configurations.

As you can see from the above comparisons the Future Proof servers cost less even when compared to a 25% utilization plan at AWS. There was a difference in the SSDs included in these plans, however, with the AWS plan including 2 x 1024 (total of 2048 GB) and the Future Proof server plan including 4 x 480GB SSD (total of 1920 GB) producing a delta of 128 GB in AWS favor. However, our plan includes 8 more vCPU and a 3.5 GB more RAM which brings the overall package resources somewhat back to even. When we look at the AWS plan with minimal bandwidth usage (5,000 GB) many companies may consider the $600/month price difference nominal. However, once we start comparing the plans with equivalent bandwidth the cost spread quickly expands. Take notice that we included 300,000 GB of outbound transfer with AWS when in reality a 1Gbps unmetered port maxed out over 1 month will push about 330,000 GB outbound. We went with the lower 300,000 amount at AWS with the understanding that even the biggest bandwidth users have slow hours. We are doing our best to keep this comparison fair and square.

So let’s take a look at another 2 plans and see how they compare. With this new comparison I wanted to get as close to identical plans as possible so I started with AWS’s offerings and backed into one of our plans to make a match. With this premise in mind, I ended on the i2.8xlarge plan at AWS which includes 16 vCPUS, 122 GB RAM, and 4 x 800 GB SSD. I used the same 25%, 50%, and 100% utilization options but this time around, I opted for 5,000 GB and 100,000 GB of bandwidth to make sure we viewed a wider range of use cases.

Future Proof Server- Baseline configuration #1 with SSD upgrades available within cart

  • Dual Hex-Core Xeon 2.4GHz E5-2620 v3 (12 physical cores with HT = 24 vCPU)
  • 128 GB DDR4 ECC REG RAM
  • 4 x 960 GB Micro DC510 SSD
  • RAID 10 (not mandatory but a hardware based RAID is free if wanted)
  • 1 Gbps Port Unmetered Bandwidth
  • Our price- $654/month, $0/setup fee

AWS – the closest to match we could find is the i2.4xlarge instance

  • 16 vCPUs
  • 122 GB RAM
  • 4 x 800 GB SSD
  • 5,000 GB outbound bandwidth (chose standard “data transfer out” option”)
  • 500 GB inbound bandwidth
  • 25% utilization- $1179.95/month
  • 50% utilization- $1866.39/month
  • 100% utilization- $3239.25/month

AWS- i2.4xlarge instance with comparable bandwidth throughput to what is included with our Future Proof Servers.

  • 16 vCPUs
  • 122 GB RAM
  • 4 x 800 GB SSD
  • 100,000 GB outbound bandwidth (chose standard “data transfer out” option”)
  • 25% utilization- $9,286.07/month
  • 50% utilization- $9,972.51/month
  • 100% utilization- $11,335.95/month

Amazon Web Services Cloud Hosting vs Future Proof Dedicated Server Price Comparison. Amazon Web Services cost nearly 3.5 times as much as a Hivelocity Future Proof server of the same configurations.

With our second comparison, the results are much the same. AWS is only $525/month more if you were to utilize only 25% of the compute each month and limited your outbound bandwidth to just 5,000 GB. Once you go to 50% compute utilization at AWS their premium increases and it is clear adding bandwidth dramatically increases costs exponentially. Take notice that the Future Proof Dedicated Server plan we used includes 8 more vCPU, 6 GB additional RAM, and 4 x 960GB SSDs (AWS includes 4 x 800GB).

If you are comparing Future Proof Dedicated Servers to AWS strictly on price, it is obvious dedicated servers clearly win. While plenty of companies choose AWS because they believe it will save them money, which we have proven above is often not the case, many companies find AWS desirable due to its ease of scale. AWS does indeed offer the ability to auto-scale, providing your application or online presence with more resources when needed. What is happening during this process, is AWS is spawning additional load-balanced instances to handle the surge. If, however, you wish to add resources to your existing instance, ex. more RAM or vCPUs, you log in to the AWS portal, pick your new plan, and perform a reboot. The reboot process takes about 10 seconds, so you face about 10 seconds of downtime.

Now let’s shift to scaling while on a dedicated server. First off, with our “Future Proof” servers, it is important to remember these are dedicated resources which typically outperform shared cloud environments pound for pound out of the gate. The point here is you will achieve better performance out of like CPU and RAM resources on dedicated, meaning the point at which you actually need to scale in the cloud may come earlier than it would on a dedicated server. With that said, the process of scaling a Future Proof server is similar to that of a cloud. Scaling out with additional servers involves adding more servers and a load balancer. We require 4 hours to deploy additional Future Proof servers (10-minute deployment for our prebuilt Instant Servers) and 30 minutes to set up the load balancer. To scale up, you log in to your portal, tell us how much more RAM and/or CPU you want, we take down the server at a time of your convenience, add the new hardware, and boot the server back up. This process takes anywhere from 5 minutes to 20 minutes depending on how much additional hardware you are requesting. So there is obviously a slight trade-off when it comes to scaling. Scaling up is a 10-second process in the cloud versus 5-20 minute process on dedicated. Scaling out can be instant in the cloud and requires several hours (no downtime) on dedicated. Keep in mind, with both solutions if downtime is required it can be accomplished at any time of day or night the customer chooses.

It is clear that both dedicated servers and the cloud have their advantages. Each company has to choose for themselves which is best for them. For many, a budget is one of the most important factors and saving $500-$20,000 per month is an easy trade-off for a 5-30 minute scaling process. For others, paying an extra $500-$20,000 is well worth it to know they can add near infinite resources in seconds. For most SMBs the need for infinite resources is just not their reality. For most SMBs a Future Proof Dedicated Server provides ample resources for today and years to come. Our hope is, regardless of what needs you have and what motivates your company, this comparison helps you pick the right solution for you.

Keep an eye out for our Future Proof Servers vs AWS hardware performance comparison coming in the next few weeks. We will be putting each of the same plans discussed today through benchmark testing to how the guts of each solution stack up against one another.
