VPS and Private Cloud: Basic Definitions and Differences

Choosing the right hosting solution is crucial for businesses aiming to optimize performance, security, and scalability. Two popular options often considered are Virtual Private Servers (VPS) and Private Cloud Services. While both offer distinct advantages, understanding their fundamental differences can help you make an informed decision tailored to your specific needs. In this blog, we’ll explore the basic definitions and key differences between VPS and Private Cloud Services, providing you with the insights needed to determine which option best suits your business requirements.

VPS (Virtual Private Server):
VPS is a virtualized server that acts as a dedicated server within a shared hosting environment. It is created by partitioning a physical server into multiple virtual servers, each with its own operating system and resources. Multiple VPS instances run on a single physical server, each isolated from the others.

Private Cloud:
Private cloud is a cloud computing environment isolated to a single organization. It offers more security, flexibility, and scalability. Private cloud infrastructure is designed for high availability and performance.

How VPS and Private Cloud Compare

Architecture

VPS

  • Uses virtualization technology to partition a physical server into multiple isolated virtual servers.
  • Each VPS has its own operating system and shared resources like CPU, RAM, and storage.
  • VPS has non-redundant infrastructure components.

Private Cloud

  • Typically involves a collection of physical and virtual resources pooled together to provide on-demand computing power.
  • Utilizes advanced virtualization and management technologies to deliver scalable and flexible computing resources.
  • Highly redundant infrastructure components for reliable and resilient operation.

Resource Allocation

VPS

  • Resources (CPU, RAM, storage) are allocated from a single physical server. Although isolated, the performance can be affected by other VPSs on the same server.
  • While CPU and RAM are fixed, they can be upgraded by changing the plan.

Private Cloud

  • Offers dynamic resource allocation, allowing for scaling up or down based on demand.
  • Resources can be pooled from multiple physical servers, providing greater flexibility and efficiency.

Scalability

VPS

  • Limited scalability due to predefined resource limits.
  • Scaling often requires manual intervention or migration to a different VPS plan.

Private Cloud

  • Highly scalable, supporting automated and on-the-fly resource allocation.
  • Can easily accommodate large-scale applications and varying workloads.

Performance

VPS

  • Performance can be affected by the physical server’s overall load and other VPS instances running on the same server (noisy neighbor effect).
  • Suitable for moderate workloads and applications with predictable resource usage.

Private Cloud

  • Offers consistent and high performance with dedicated resources and load balancing across multiple servers.
  • Ideal for high-demand applications and workloads requiring consistent performance.

Control and Customization

VPS

  • Limited customization options due to shared environment constraints.
  • Provides root access and control over the server environment, like a dedicated server.

Private Cloud

  • High level of customization available, with the ability to configure the entire cloud environment.
  • Supports custom configurations, policies, and management tools.

Security

VPS

  • Offers a certain level of isolation but still shares the physical server with other tenants, which can pose security risks.
  • Security is shared with the hosting provider, which may manage aspects like physical security and some network protections.

Private Cloud

  • Enhanced security with dedicated resources and infrastructure.
  • Greater control over security policies, compliance, and governance. Often complies with higher security and regulatory standards. Supports enhanced authentication, role-based access, and logging.

Cost

VPS

  • Generally more cost-effective for small to medium-sized businesses as resources are shared.
  • Pay for a fixed amount of resources, making it easier to predict costs but unable to scale on demand.

Private Cloud

  • Higher initial and ongoing costs due to dedicated infrastructure and vast features. Costs can be based on actual usage (pay-as-you-go) or a fixed subscription model.
  • Costs can be offset by the ability to optimize resource usage and improve efficiency.

Management and Maintenance

VPS

  • Limited control over the underlying physical infrastructure. Management tasks are usually confined to the virtual server itself.
  • Easier to manage for users with less technical expertise.
  • Maintenance of the physical server and underlying infrastructure is handled by the hosting provider.

Private Cloud

  • Requires more complex management, often needing dedicated IT staff or managed services.
  • Full control over the entire cloud infrastructure, including physical servers, storage, and networking components. Provides comprehensive management tools and APIs for automation and orchestration.
  • Maintenance can be managed internally by the organization’s IT team or outsourced to a third-party provider. Offers more flexibility in managing updates, patches, and other maintenance tasks.

Use Cases

VPS

  • Suitable for web hosting, small to medium-sized applications, development environments, and small-scale databases.
  • Ideal for businesses that need dedicated server-like capabilities without the cost of a full dedicated server.

Private Cloud

  • Ideal for large enterprises, applications with high-security requirements, big data analytics, and applications requiring high scalability and performance.
  • Suitable for organizations needing comprehensive control over their computing environment.

In Conclusion

VPS is a cost-effective solution suitable for smaller workloads with moderate performance and customization needs, offering a balance between shared and dedicated hosting.

Private Cloud provides a robust, secure, and highly scalable infrastructure, ideal for larger enterprises and organizations with stringent security, performance, and regulatory requirements. It offers comprehensive control and customization.

By understanding these differences, businesses can better decide which type of service aligns with their specific needs, budget, and technical requirements.

When it was announced earlier this year that content delivery network (CDN) provider Akamai would acquire IaaS cloud platform provider Linode for a staggering $900 million, it left many feeling uncertain: especially Linode’s existing customer base. While the merger has boosted Akamai’s financial numbers for this quarter, like the acquisition of cPanel by Oakley Capital back in 2018, it’s well-known that these large-scale buyouts more often than not result in price increases and decreased levels of service for current customers. Understandably, this has left much of Linode’s base in a state of turmoil, unsure of the company’s future and on the verge of exodus. In this article we’ll take a look at what this acquisition means for current and future customers, discuss the rising discontent among Linode’s base, and assess possible alternatives for customers in need of reliable services from other providers.

Akamai’s Growing Ambitions

When the merger was first announced, the immediate response among most was confusion. How exactly would this fusion of Akamai’s CDN and security services benefit the developer-friendly, Linux-based IaaS cloud platform Linode had grown famous for? Unfortunately, it has become apparent that Akamai’s ambitions extend far beyond a simple cloud service addition to their tech portfolio. Instead, their plans for Linode seem focused on presenting “major enterprise” size clients with what Akamai CEO Tom Leighton boldly refers to as “the world’s most distributed compute platform.” In other words, they’re focusing on edge computing and cloud development synergies at scale in an effort to compete directly with hyperscale cloud providers like AWS and Microsoft Azure.

While Akamai claims this integration of Linode’s existing locations into their private backbone will result in “lower latency, higher throughput, and improved egress economics,” the fact remains that they are potentially disrupting the essence of what made Linode stand out in the market. Linode’s success in creating a market for alternative clouds by catering to developers with an affordable way to build new applications, now risks being overshadowed by Akamai’s overarching objectives.

Linode’s Email to Current Customers

To no one’s surprise, it didn’t take long for Akamai to announce that they would be increasing prices. In an email sent out to current Linode customers in early March, the company stated the following changes would be occurring on April 1st, 2023.

As we expand our cloud product portfolio and work to improve the resiliency and reach of our network, we face the same challenges as many of our customers: a tough financial climate with growing costs for data center space, energy usage, and newer hardware. We have resisted making changes to our offerings for as long as possible, and we understand this may not be the news you wish to hear from us, but we are announcing price changes for certain compute services effective April 1, 2023.

On April 1st, you will see the following changes to our pricing model:

Shared and Dedicated CPU plan prices will increase by 20%. The price of additional IPv4 addresses beyond 1 will increase from $1 to $2 each, per month across all of our existing core data center locations.

The email goes on to assure customers that falling egress fees will help compensate for this, but a 20% increase in price on most services coupled with a 50% increase in the price of additional IP addresses is a much steeper increase than most were hoping for.

Linode Customer Response

Needless to say, most customers were unhappy to receive news that their monthly bills would be increasing. This is especially true considering these increases come in exchange for no tangible new benefits or added value. While most saw this price hike coming from a mile away, the 20% increase that was announced feels like a slap in the face to many.

Within Reddit and Linode’s own community forums, the general sentiment towards these changes seems to be a growing bitterness with more and more users discussing leaving the company for better priced alternatives. In spite of Linode’s assurances that they “remain more aggressively priced” than their peers, many users have been quick to point out that this simply isn’t true anymore. Customers who had been planning on making upgrades are now forced to consider if their needs would be better met through other providers. The end result is further turmoil and instability in an industry where consistency and reliability are paramount.

But what can current Linode customers do?

As your organization grows, the necessity for a robust and scalable hosting solution capable of supporting your evolving digital infrastructure becomes essential. You might have the best application in the world, but without the systems in place to support its growth, your potential success will be limited. With their combination of flexibility and cost-effective scaling, VPS (Virtual Private Server) Hosting has emerged as a popular solution for organizations of all sizes seeking dynamic solutions to their changing infrastructure needs. And now, Hivelocity, with our extensive experience in the tech industry, is proud to announce that this Fall 2023, we will launch our VPS product, offering customers a solution that brings unparalleled scalability while integrating seamlessly into our existing catalogue of dedicated server infrastructure offerings. If you’ve been looking for the perfect addition to your existing dedicated server infrastructure, read on to learn all about the unique advantages available to you exclusively with VPS through Hivelocity.

What Are the Benefits of VPS?

When it comes to the main advantages of VPS services, there are 4 key benefits which must be discussed. These benefits are:

  • Enhanced Scalability
  • Cost-Effective Resource Usage
  • Improved Security
  • Greater Reliability

But in the end, these advantages are true of all VPS solutions. What really set’s Hivelocity VPS apart from the competition is our Automated Private Networking and Superior Technical Support. In the following sections, we’ll take a look at these 6 benefits of Virtual Private Servers and how they form together to become your DevOps team’s new secret weapon.

Enhanced Scalability

Scalability is a crucial aspect of any hosting solution, as it enables businesses to adapt quickly to changing demands. VPS empowers organizations with the ability to scale resources up or down based on their specific needs. By integrating with our public API via Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools like Terraform, Hivelocity’s VPS product takes this scalability to new heights, allowing customers to seamlessly integrate virtual machines with their existing dedicated server infrastructure. Isolate workflows, scale up resources on-demand, and build complex, fully optimized systems capable of supporting your organization’s growth for years to come. By leveraging the benefits of both dedicated and virtual environments, this integration provides businesses with unparalleled flexibility and resource optimization.

Cost-Effective Resource Usage

Traditional dedicated server hosting can be expensive. For small to medium-sized businesses with limited budgets, the superior resources and reliability of dedicated hardware may feel like an unaffordable investment. With the pay-for-what-you-use pricing structure offered by VPS, companies can tap into the superior resources of dedicated server hardware at a fraction of the price. Hivelocity’s VPS services allows customers to achieve cost savings by consolidating their infrastructure and avoiding the need to invest in additional physical servers. Scale up automatically with additional Virtual Machines (VMs) for periods of increased need, and scale back during periods of minimal use, only paying for the resources you use when you need them. This cost-effective approach is further enhanced by Hivelocity’s competitive pricing plans, ensuring businesses get the most value for their investment.

Improved Security

In today’s cybersecurity landscape, protecting sensitive data is of the utmost importance. Controlling which users have access to which workflows and which aspects of your infrastructure make direct contact with the Internet can be essential to protecting the interests of your organization and customers. With VPS hosting, a single dedicated server is split into multiple virtual instances with each environment fully isolated from any others. With full control over which machines have access to which ports, networks, and workflows, and the ability to control user access on a per VM level, VPS allows system administrators to divide large systems into smaller parcels, developing tightly organized networks of virtual machines. This increased level of control combined with Hivelocity’s proprietary FENS defense network, advanced physical security systems, firewalls, intrusion detection, and regular security audits means you can rest easy knowing your data is in the hands of true industry experts.

Greater Reliability

Reliability and uptime are paramount in the hosting industry. Downtime can lead to significant financial losses, damage to brand reputation, and a loss of customer trust. Backed by our 99.999% uptime guarantee, world-class self-healing network, and 20+ years of industry experience, Hivelocity is the hosting partner you can rely on. Our data centers are equipped with redundant power systems, climate control, advanced security measures, and a 24/7 monitoring and support team. This infrastructure ensures optimal uptime and data accessibility for customers, guaranteeing a reliable hosting environment for your critical applications and services. By taking advantage of our 40+ international data centers, customers can spread their infrastructure around, creating further redundancies and safeguards. When you need to know that your data is accessible 24/7 from anywhere in the world, Hivelocity has got your back.

Automated Private Networking

Networking is a critical component of any hosting infrastructure. Hivelocity’s VPS products provide customers with the advantage of automated networking via unmetered private networks, a feature exclusive to our services. This means that data transfers between virtual machines and dedicated servers within the Hivelocity ecosystem are not counted towards bandwidth consumption, and these VLAN connections can be established automatically, saving valuable time for your DevOps team. As a result, businesses can enjoy faster, more efficient communication between their different infrastructure components without worrying about exceeding bandwidth limits or incurring additional costs. This, combined with our free data ingress, 20TB of monthly free data egress included with every VM, and our industry low fees for data transfer exceeding 20TB per month, means that your organization could be saving thousands of dollars every month with Hivelocity VPS.

Superior Technical Support

Having a reliable and knowledgeable support team is essential. If you’ve ever had to wait on hold for Microsoft or AWS support, you know how crucial it is to have support you can rely on. At Hivelocity, we distinguish ourselves with our award-winning 24/7/365 USA-based technical support. If problems arise at 2:00 AM, you can rest easy knowing you’re backed by experienced professionals who are passionate about providing top-notch assistance. With an average ticket response of under 10 minutes, customers can rely on Hivelocity’s support team to quickly address any technical issues, offer guidance on infrastructure optimization, and ensure a seamless hosting experience.

In Conclusion

For organizations looking to achieve enhance scalability, cost-efficiency, and seamless integration with their existing dedicated server infrastructure, there’s no better option than VPS through Hivelocity. With the added benefits of automated networking via unmetered private networks, unmatched reliability, robust security measures, and exceptional technical support, Hivelocity’s VPS services empower businesses to thrive.

Check back often for more news and updates as we approach our full-scale launch.

Chances are you’ve heard of VPS hosting and are wondering if it’s the right fit for you. After all, as every business owner knows, managing your own company or website involves making difficult choices. Beyond the obvious questions surrounding which services, products, or information to provide, understanding the technical requirements of maintaining your own site are just as important. With so many service types and providers, how can you know which options are best for your small business?

With its flexible blend of control, affordability, scalability, and security, VPS hosting might be the perfect solution for your business’s growing needs.

In this analysis, we’ll determine the advantages and disadvantages of VPS. By the end, we’ll arm you with all the information you need to feel confident when deciding which hosting service type is ideal for you.

So What is VPS?

A VPS, or Virtual Private Server, is a form of hosting that straddles the line between shared hosting and dedicated servers. Offering a range of benefits from both, VPS bridges the gap between shared web hosting and owning or renting your own server.

But what does this mean for you?

Well to understand what VPS is, we first need to discuss what it isn’t.

VPS bridges the gap between shared web hosting and owning or renting your own server.

VPS vs Shared Hosting

Shared hosting is something most website owners are familiar with, even if they don’t specifically know the term. After all, it’s the starting place for the majority of websites. For a variety of reasons, shared hosting is an ideal option for newly established sites and those whose daily traffic is still low.

The principle behind shared hosting is simple: a remote hosting service provides a server and sells space on that server to multiple users for a small monthly fee. The hosting service then maintains the server. This frees site owners to focus their time on building and promoting rather than worrying about server maintenance.

While this option offers a hands-free and cost-effective solution for users, these advantages come at the expense of reduced control, lower security, and limited resource allocation.

Shared hosting is similar to your first apartment or dorm room at college. In exchange for a small fee, you’re given space in a room that’s shared with multiple other users and maintained by the hosting service. Because you’re sharing the space, your monthly fees are reduced. Since you don’t own the space though, your options to change or modify it are limited.

In addition to limiting your options for customization, your resources are limited as well. With shared hosting, server resources such as memory and processing power are shared between all users. If another site on your shared space experiences a sudden boost in traffic, the resulting drain on resources affects you too.

Think of it this way: your apartment has a shared kitchen used by you and all your roommates. There are only so many utensils. If one of your roommates throws a party and uses up all the forks, knives, and plates, there aren’t any left for you or anyone else.

Beyond this, should one of the other sites on your shared server experience a security breach, this can affect you as well. This leaves your website potentially open to unauthorized access. Since you don’t own the server, all hope for resolution is in the hands of your service provider.

While shared hosting offers a hands-free and cost-effective solution for users, these advantages come at the expense of reduced control, lower security, and limited resource allocation.

VPS hosting operates on the same principle of multiple users sharing a single server. The difference is, VPS uses virtualization technology to create clear divides within that space.

If shared hosting is tantamount to sharing an apartment with roommates, then VPS hosting is like renting your own apartment in a shared complex. You don’t own the building, but your individual room is yours to do with as you see fit.

The result is that while a server may have multiple users accessing it all at once, their resources never overlap. This means if one user places strain on their server’s output through increased traffic, it has no effect on the other virtual servers within that space.

This diagram should provide a better illustration of what this difference looks like:

The other advantage VPS hosting brings is greater control. Unlike in shared hosting, where the service provider makes all decisions regarding the server, with a VPS, you retain power over what happens in your virtual space.

  • Want to use a different operating system (OS) than what comes pre-packaged on your server?

  • Need stronger security options or a specific software necessary for your site to run at its optimal efficiency?

  • Tired of forced updates breaking your systems with no control over when and how these changes are implemented?

No problem. With VPS hosting, you’re in control.

Additionally, although you are still sharing space with others, should another site on your server come under threat, a breach in security on one VPS won’t spread easily to others, as each VPS acts as its own independent server.

Now of course, with more control comes an increased price-tag and a greater need for self-maintenance and technical know-how. However, with more companies offering a variety of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) options, including Managed VPS, the right solution for your business’s needs is already out there. We’ll discuss the difference between managed and unmanaged VPS in greater detail a bit later on.

VPS vs Dedicated Servers

So, if shared hosting represents the low-end of the hosting spectrum, what does the high-end look like? This is where hosting on dedicated servers comes in.

A dedicated personal server is exactly what it sounds like. Rather than sharing space on a remote server with multiple users, a dedicated server is a physical machine, either purchased or rented, that houses only the owner’s data.

Dedicated servers represent the premium hosting option for large companies with high traffic and greater security needs.

Now there are some clear advantages and disadvantages to this which should be immediately obvious:

  • Owning/renting your own server gives you complete control over everything on it

  • The user has access to the full server’s resources as opposed to a pre-allocated amount of RAM or processing power

  • Owning an entire server means the highest level of possible security as no users outside the owner are affecting the server directly

  • In exchange for greater control and options, purchasing an entire server as opposed to just a portion of one means higher costs and more hands-on maintenance

After all, to expand on the previous metaphor, if VPS hosting is like renting an apartment, then hosting on a dedicated server is equivalent to owning your own house.

There’s another important advantage to using a dedicated server that might be less obvious though. While the use of a VPS can give users full control over the software running on their server, their options end there. By owning or renting your own dedicated server, you not only have control over your software but your hardware options as well.

Need a stronger processor or additional RAM? When purchasing a dedicated server most companies offering IaaS include a multitude of pre-built options designed to fit a variety of needs.

Still can’t find the right option? Custom servers built to your specifications are available as well, giving complete control to users in exchange for a higher degree of technical experience.

For these reasons, dedicated servers represent the premium hosting option for large companies with high traffic and greater security needs. For well-established eCommerce sites for example, dedicated servers may be essential.

But what if you don’t need or want this level of control and responsibility?

The advantage of a VPS is it offers many of the same perks of a dedicated server, albeit less powerfully, but with greater affordability and the ability to scale as needed. As your business grows, if your current resources become too thinly stretched, expanding your VPS is as easy as taking over another partition on the server you share.

While purchasing a dedicated server gives you greater resources to begin with, if you use up those resources, scalability is limited by the physical hardware selected. If you want a better server, you’ll need to buy or build a new one and transfer data over. This process may prove necessary for larger companies with massive data storage requirements, but depending on your business’s needs and traffic, the use of a dedicated server might not be the right next step for you.

When is it Right to Switch to VPS?

A series of red and white cables plugged into the back of a server

As with everything in life, there’s no one-size-fits-all measurement for when it’s the right time to upgrade to VPS hosting. The basic rule of thumb is: if you’re experiencing issues on your shared hosting service that’s impacting your business, it might be time to consider switching to a VPS hosting solution.

Some examples of issues that might justify a switch:

  • If you’re experiencing persistent slowdowns due to increased traffic or resource-draining from another user’s increased traffic

  • When you’re experiencing security issues due to breaches occurring on other user’s sites

  • When you need greater control over the OS and software running on your server

If you’re struggling with any of these issues, it might be time to research which VPS providers can offer your business a better experience.

However, maybe you’re ready to make the switch, but you’re concerned that the increased responsibilities of managing your own server are beyond your current technical abilities. No need to worry. This is where the difference between unmanaged and managed VPS hosting comes into play.

Unmanaged vs Managed VPS

So let’s say you’ve decided to make the move to a VPS. You’ve looked at some service providers, analyzed your options, and selected the package that best fits your current needs.

Now what?

If you’re working with an unmanaged VPS, the rest is on you. Updates, software installation, data backup, making sure these important processes occur as needed is now your responsibility. While this option yields the highest level of direct control, it also requires technical expertise to pull it off.

To combat this, IaaS companies have begun offering Managed VPS hosting as an option for their clients. With managed VPS, a technician working on-site can oversee these necessary maintenance procedures for an additional monthly fee.

Through managed VPS hosting, users have the control and customization options of a dedicated server with a price-tag and maintenance responsibility more akin to shared hosting. These reasons make VPS a perfect solution for companies in need of a service that can grow alongside them.

Considerations when Choosing a VPS Hosting Provider

Like with any hosting service, there are three important factors to consider when looking for the right provider:

  1. Affordability – does the cost of the service fit into your monthly/yearly budget?

  2. Reliability – does the hosting service provide a consistently stable experience for its users?

  3. Customer Service – will your questions and needs be handled in a timely manner and with minimal downtime?
