Zimbra 8 is a Free Email Server and is considered an Exchange replacement. Zimbra has an easy to use Web GUI that will allow you to manage your email efficiently. Here are the steps to take when installing Zimbra a Free VPS or Dedicated Server

1. Install CentOS 64 bit minimal install. You can use 32bit as well.
2. Create your MX records and A Records before you start.
3. yum -y install nc wget nano make nc sudo sysstat libtool-ltdl glibc perl ntp

4. Turn off sendmail if installed and turn off iptables.

chkconfig sendmail off
chkconfig ip6tables off
chkconfig iptables off

5. Disable selinux vi or nano /etc/selinux/config change the selinux= line to SELINUX=disabled
6. Add the mail servers hostname
vi /etc/hosts
192.168.10.10 mail.server.com

7. Download Zimbra to your server

  • wget https://files2.zimbra.com/downloads/8.0.4_GA/zcs-8.0.4_GA_5737.RHEL6_64.20130524120036.tgz

 

 

8. Extract Zimbra

  • tar xvzf zcs-8.0.4_GA_5737.RHEL6_64.20130524120036.tgz

 

 

9. cd to the extracted directory

  • cd zcs-8.0.4_GA_5737.RHEL6_64.20130524120036

 

 

10. Run the install script

  • ./install.sh -platform-override

 

11. Answer the prompts Y = YES

  • Do you agree with the terms of the software license agreement? [N] Y
  • Do you agree with the terms of the software license agreement? [N] Y
  • Install zimbra-ldap [Y]
  • Install zimbra-logger [Y]
  • Install zimbra-mta [Y]
  • Install zimbra-snmp [Y]
  • Install zimbra-store [Y]
  • Install zimbra-apache [Y]
  • Install zimbra-spell [Y]
  • Install zimbra-memcached [N]
  • Install zimbra-proxy [N]

 

 

You appear to be installing packages on a platform different than the platform for which they were built. This platform is CentOS6_64 Packages found: RHEL6_64. This may or may not work. Using packages for a platform in which they were not designed for may result in an installation that is NOT usable. Your support options may be limited if you choose to continue.

  • Install anyway? [N] Y
  • The system will be modified. Continue? [N] Y

 

 

You may get the following error if DNS is not resolving correctly.

  • DNS ERROR resolving MX for mail.server.com

 

 

It is suggested that the domain name have an MX record configured in DNS

  • Change domain name? [Yes] Y

 

 

Add your domain name next.

  • Create domain: [mail.server.com] server.com

 

 

MX: mail.server.com (192.168.10.10)

  • Interface: 192.168.10.10
  • Interface: 172.0.0.1
  • Interface: ::1
  • done.

 

 

12. Next you will come to the Main Menu which will show your configuration. Select #3 then change the Admin Password under option #4 next hit r to go back.

  • *** CONFIGURATION COMPLETE – press ‘a’ to apply
  • Select from menu, or press ‘a’ to apply config (? – help) a
  • Save configuration data to a file? [Yes] Y
  • The system will be modified – continue? [No] Y

 

 

13. When it finishes hit return to exit.

  • To access the web administration console point your browser to : https://mail.server.com:7071
  • The clients web console is available at : https://mail.server.com
  • You can configure domains and DNS later with in the Zimbra administration console.

Sometimes you receive the following error while browsing webmail:

Warning: main(../config/config.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /usr/local/cpanel/base/3rdparty/squirrelmail/functions/global.php on line 18

Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required ‘../config/config.php’ (include_path=’/usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/lib/php/:.’) in /usr/local/cpanel/base/3rdparty/squirrelmail/functions/global.php on line 18

As a fix for this, please execute the below command:

/scripts/fixwebmail

During that, if you get the following error

[/scripts]# ./fixwebmail
chown: failed to get attributes of `/usr/local/etc/cpanel/base/webmail/data’: No such file or directory
chmod: failed to get attributes of `/usr/local/etc/cpanel/base/webmail/data’: No such file or directory

Then execute the following command :

cp -p /usr/local/cpanel/base/3rdparty/squirrelmail/config/config_default.php /usr/local/cpanel/base/3rdparty/squirrelmail/config/config.php

Refresh the page for squirrelmail , you won’t receive the error.

1) Login to WHM

Click Exim Configuration Editor

Check the box next to:
“Send outgoing mail from the ip that matches the domain name in /etc/mailips (*: IP can be added to the file to change the main outgoing interface)”

Save Changes

Then edit the file /etc/mailips

from shell and add:

*: #ReplacewithnewIP#

service exim restart

2) Login to Shell

Access the Exim configuration file:
nano /etc/exim.conf

Locate remote_smtp

The default setup will look like:

remote_smtp:
driver = smtp
interface = ${if exists {/etc/mailips}{${lookup{$sender_address_domain}lsearch{/etc/mailips}{$value}{}}}{}}
helo_data = ${if exists {/etc/mailhelo}{${lookup{$sender_address_domain}lsearch{/etc/mailhelo}{$value}{$primary_hostname}}}{$primary_ho stname}}

Change to:

remote_smtp:
driver = smtp
interface = 12.14.12.14 # Change to your server IP address.

Save changes and exit.

Restart Exim

If there is an exim update when you upgrade your cPanel server you will need to re-enter the interface again.
